Homework #1

Chapter 1:
                    1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 14, 16, 18, 39

Hints/comments:

1.6: First express the virial equation in terms of pressure and density (instead of pressure and molar volume). Then interpret the virial expansion in terms of the intercept, slope, etc. of a plot of P/density vs. P.

1.7: the most accurate method is to fit a straight line to (Z-1)Vm vs. 1/Vm (where Vm is the molar volume)

1.14: for the first part of this problem, your initial result will depend on T, but this dotted line belongs to all isotherms (it's equation should not depend on T). So eliminate T by solving the vdW equation for T and substituting. For the 2nd part, please note Eq. 1.31 in the text.

1.18: for the last part of this problem, remember the series expansion of ex.

1.39: your final results for alpha and kappa should be expressed in terms of T, P, and b
